Make an Effect

In this page, we'll learn about effect, layer, and track; the fundamentals of the pattern. Then, we'll create our first effect.

Pattern Fundamentals

To describe a pattern in a nutshell,

  • A pattern is made of effects, which are placed on tracks.
  • An effect is made of layers.
  • A layer contains actual haptic info.

Layer

Untitled

Layer contains the characteristics of the haptic such as device type, timing graph, transition effect, and so on.

We'll talk about layer more in the next page. For now, let's just remember that the layer actually contains the haptic information.

Effect

Effect is a collection of layers. It has its own duration, and it is positioned and sequenced within a track.

With effect, you can easily manage layers. We'll learn about it later.

Track

Track is a horizontal space that contain the effects. Tracks are visualized by timeline in which the effects can be sequenced in the track along the timeline.

We'll talk about the track, and control it using the timeline later. For now, let's just remember that the track is a container of effects for sequencing.

Let's make something!

Our first effect

The editor is empty. You'll notice that there is a "New Effect" button on the top left. Let's press it.

Right after you pressed it, there are some noticeable changes. Let's see what has happened.

  • (A) There is an "Effect 1" element at Effect/Layer Panel on the left.
  • (B) There is also an "Effect 1" element at timeline on the bottom.
  • (C) At Canvas in the center, you can see the image of TactSuit with some icons at the top.

We made our first effect. Next, we'll go ahead and add some layers in the effect.
